Young children are not yet able to completely control or understand their emotions. As parents, it is our job to make sure that we are equipping our children with tools that allow them to better understand and control their emotions. One way that parents can encourage children to pause, reflect, and regain control of big feelings is through breathing exercises.
Below are two free exercises that you can use with your children to encourage breathing in a calm, safe, comfortable corner of your home when your child’s emotions are running high.
The first is the Breathing Star. The other is the Breathing Rainbow. Each work with our original Lollipop Lola “Breathe With Me” video.
The breathing star is simple. Have your child place their fingers on a star and follow the arch of the rainbow as they breath in and out at their own pace. Repeat as many times as needed for your child to be calm.
This activity gives children time to calm down and process their emotions, and, over time, learn to control their emotions.
The breathing rainbow is even simpler than the breathing star. Guide children through inhaling, exhaling, and holding their breath using the star as a guide. Have children follow with their finger as they inhale, exhale, and hold for 3-5 seconds each depending on your child’s lung capacity.
This activity gives children time to calm down and process their emotions, and, over time, learn to control their emotions.
