Lil Black books was founded in 2020 by Kiki Bryant, a Black mother, designer, and author based in Chicago. Her first original character, Lollipop Lola was based on her own daughter, Harley. Kiki created Lola because she noticed there was a lack of characters and stories that didn’t center identity politics, hair, or blackness in the margins. Lil Black Books creates books and toys that encourage imagination, creation, and children’s socioemotional growth.
Black children deserve stories where they are learning, playing, exploring, and learning lessons about themselves and their emotions that don’t solely center racialized trauma.
I aim to provide them.
